“I’m very proud to have been a fighter pilot and have served our nation, but the most important thing I’ve ever done is raise good-hearted, thoughtful children. I believe our children are capable of exceeding even their own expectations...I’m honored to have served on the board and bring a focus on fiscal management, improving safety and security, and lowering class sizes.”
— Michael Keaton

  • Currently a senior manager in the defense industry helping secure our nation’s defense by improving the combat effectiveness of manned and unmanned aircraft

  • Michael served 20 years in the Air Force as an F-16 fighter pilot.  He also built and commanded the first ever formal training school for unmanned aircrew

His performance report:  “Rapidly performed a top to bottom review of the squadron organizational structure, assessed the deficiencies and executed a game plan to meet standards in only 3 months!  He led this broken squadron from an unfocused organization to an Air Combat Command standard formal training unit, and he has graduated the best-ever trained Predator aircrews”

  • After returning home from military service, Michael moved to Puyallup to live near family and put his first-grader (at the time) into an outstanding school district

  • Michael served as a volunteer dad for the Edgerton Elementary “Watchdogs” and acted as a legislative liaison for Puyallup School District PTA

  • He has also motivated and taught kids as a coach for a youth basketball team and a Challenger League Baseball team for disabled children

Currently Michael proudly serves as member of the Puyallup School Board…asking the right questions at the right times, being a voice of calm during difficult times, and always looking toward the future and the best interests of our students, teachers, staff, and community

  • Pathway to Promise – partnership with the UW Tacoma providing direct entrance to college

  • Michael continually pushes for advancing Career and Technical Education (CTE):

    • We have partnered with Clover Park Technical College and MultiCare to offer a certification in nursing including in-classroom training and clinical experience within local healthcare agencies

    • We have partnered with Aerospace Joint Apprenticeship Committee (AJAC) for a Production Technician Apprenticeship program leading to immediate employment upon graduation

  • We have expanded testing for highly capable programs to include all 2nd grade students, and now all 9th grade students can take the PSAT at no cost

  • We are doubling the number of highly capable offerings at Elementary (QUEST), tripling them at the junior high level (PAGE) and are now bringing AP Capstone diploma programs to all three comprehensive high schools

  • With tremendous community support, our Elementary School Bond passed at 69.1%

  • Through unprecedented management of the Elementary School Bond, we delivered on the 7 promised projects and will actually complete 13 projects, while also clearing a 12-year backlog of building maintenance and eliminating  the need for a junior high specific bond

Our 5-year plan is to reduce the impact of public schools on our community property tax rates once the high schools are updated and secure

  • Michael is the leading advocate for safety on the board, resulting in additional School Resource Officers and ensuring local law enforcement attendance and participation at Safety and Security Study Sessions

  • We have worked with the city to create safer crosswalks, extensive training for safety scenarios in coordination with law enforcement agencies, and added an emphasis on suicide prevention

  • Through focused partnership with local law enforcement, the adding of School Resource Officers, and strategic placement of cameras and securing entrances, our security is now the model. Other districts come to us to see how it’s done.
